Unemployment in Ohio Counties
During the period of 2000 - 2022 Ohio counties experienced many fluctuations in unemployment. In addition, the spatial distribution of unemployment rates is highly heterogeneous.
Use the slider above to select the year for which to show unemployment rates. You can hover the mouse over a county to view its name, unemployment rate, and workforce details.
Things to notice:
- The gradual increase in unemployment rates starting around 2008 and ending around 2015. This corresponds to the mortgage crisis and the 'great recession' of the 2000's.
- Spatial heterogeneity: Some regions of the state have consistently higher unemployment. For example, move the slider and pay attention to the southeast counties (those that are adjacent to the Appalachian region).
- Holmes County. This county in just to the Northeast of the center of the state fared consistently better than most others during unemployment fluctuations.
